Polypropylene merupakan satu dari 7 jenis tingkatan plastik yang ada. Bahan pembuat plastik ini adalah jenis plastik terbaik yang bisa digunakan sebagai kemasan makanan dan minuman karena mampu mencegah terjadinya reaksi kimia, tahan terhadap panas dan bisa digunakan berulang-ulang.
Sesuai dengan karakteristik dari Polypropylene, kantong plastik yang dihasilkan dari polytam ini memiliki berbagai karakteristik, yaitu berwarna bening, mengkilap, antistatik rendah dan mudah dibuka. Selain itu, plastik yang dibuat dari bahan baku Polytam terbilang aman meskipun bersentuhan langsung dengan makanan dan minuman sehingga dapat digunakan sebagai wadah, kemasan, serta peralatan makanan dan minuman. Berbeda dari plastik jenis PET (polietilena tereftalat) yang biasanya digunakan untuk membuat produk plastik sekali pakai, seperti botol air minum dalam kemasan, plastik yang berasal dari Polytam dapat digunakan berkali-kali tanpa risiko kesehatan yang mungkin ditimbulkan.
Diproduksi di Refinery Unit III Plaju sejak tahun 1973, produk ini dibagi menjadi tiga jenis yaitu Polytam Film (PF 1000), Polytam Yarn (PY 240), Polytam Injection. Polytam Film biasa digunakan untuk bahan baku pembuatan kantong plastik makanan, sayuran, buah dan roti, tubular film, cast film. Polytam Injection digunakan untuk bahan baku barang plastik perlengkapan rumah tangga, suku cadang kendaraan, pembungkus baterai, peralatan makanan dan karena sifatnya yang aman ini, Polytam juga menjadi bahan baku mainan anak-anak dan digunakan dalam industri obat-obatan.
Melihat dari banyaknya barang-barang yang dihasilkan dari Polytam, plastik menjadi barang yang banyak dimanfaatkan untuk meringankan aktivitas sehari-hari. Pada tahun 2020 lalu, hasil produksi Polytam Polypropylene mencapai 46.702 ton atau 103,8% dari target. Melalui Pertamina RU III Plaju, Pertamina berharap bisa memenuhi kebutuhan industri plastik nasional akan produk Polypropylene berkualitas tinggi.
